Coordination is a difficult task. It is difficult to do two things at once-i.e. steer a horse and keep your feet in the exact spot as needed. The best things; a horse knows you like a dog and it is true that they understand what behavior you need for what type of therapy to move forward. This is the reason I have always been attached to riding horses. I was never great. I did it and loved all the horses. I loved helping clean, brush and feed the horses. I came up with a song with my best friend as we cleaned and the horses go in the pasture to run!
Riding horses always helps my coordination and balance. The one item I will always have trouble is my left leg/leg foot. I do not have motor skills to move the area as a person without a stroke. Therefore; to keep my left foot with my ankle down is extremely difficult. I do however use my right leg and right foot to do it for both. I also found out that my left leg and left foot clasp like my left hand and left arm. Therefore; my left leg goes into the "hook" and created a tight grasp that takes a minute to undo.
